The Storymakers app recognizes excellence in original student nonfiction that pushes the traditional boundaries of narrative. The 17 features appearing in the app represent the Grand Prize Winners and Finalists from the 2013 Digital Storymakers Award, sponsored by Atavist and the Pearson Foundation.
The contest, which ran from January through May, was open to any student enrolled in a high school, college, or graduate degree-granting program. Its purpose was to engage young people from across the country with digital-first storytelling using the Creatavist platform, developed by Atavist.
The winning stories blend text, photography, original illustration, video, audio, documentation, interactive maps, and other rich media features that pop and move in cinematic fashion before your eyes. From the magical realism-inspired tale of a Colombian recycler moving through a his country's decades of change, to the story of China’s imperial footprint in Africa’s poorest country, to one winner’s return to re-document the drowning of her grandmother’s sister—and what hadn’t actually happened—through intermingled voices, to a prisoner’s remorse from behind bars about a stray bullet that changed his life, this narrative collection delivers the future of storytelling in your hands.
