About the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu
The Hyakunin Isshu is a card game in which the players try to match the first and second halves of each poem in "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets." The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu anthology is famous for its many love poems selected by Fujiwara no Teika. The poems are in the form of waka, a predecessor of haiku more commonly known today as tanka.
Many versions of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu have been published, but the version from PIE Books is especially popular because of its beautiful graphics, lyrical photographs by Yukikazu Ito, and the rhythmical English translations by Emiko Miyashita and Michael Dylan Welch.
This app presents the transcendent world of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu poems in English and Japanese, complete with vocal recordings of each poem in Japanese performed by professional readers. Beginners will feel a sense of closeness to each poem and photograph, and experts will also enjoy it by reading fresh interpretations of these famous poems. We invite you to give yourself over to these lyrical expressions of Japanese classical literature through your eyes and ears.
