It’s hard to work up sympathy for one of nature’s most efficient aquatic killing machines (a few species, anyway), but I think it’s do-able. Sharks might not be cuddly, and they have been known to attack and/or kill people, but that’s no reason to hunt them to extinction. Especially for some overpriced soup. Which is why WildAid, The Discovery Channel, and Gameloft have joined forces for Shark Week to raise awareness and do a bit of fund raising through Shark Dash.

For the rest of the month and a few weeks in August, players of both the iOS and ad-supported Google Play versions of Shark Dash will be able to purchase special “limited time only” content – most notably a new skin for Sharky – for a monetary show of support. Proceeds will go toward raising awareness and hopefully reducing the demand for shark fin soup; a luxury dish with rapidly growing demand and a rapidly diminishing source. Over 70 million sharks per year, in fact.

The special content will be available until August 18th, and I urge anyone with the means to do their part. Sharks may not be cute, fuzzy, or huggable (I sure as heck would never go swimming with one, except possibly a whale shark), but they don’t deserve to die out over something like this.

Five For Friday: Week Of April 20

Posted by Jennifer Allen on April 20th, 2012

Easter is an increasingly distant memory and we're well and truly into Spring for the Northern Hemisphere. Hopefully, in turn, these five apps will keep a spring in readers' step across the weekend and beyond. It's a distinctly light hearted bunch.

MyCityWay Now
Arguably the most useful app in the line up, MyCityWay Now promises a personalized snapshot of the city of New York, instantly giving users information on everything from the best nightlife, restaurants and even the best places to park. Live traffic cameras and transit updates should stop users getting stuck in traffic, also. 72 more cities are set to be added to the app in future updates.

Saving Private Sheep 2
A sequel to fun physics puzzler, Saving Private Sheep, Saving Private Sheep 2 offers more sheep versus fox fun. Use the catapult to fling sheep at the foxes across 66 lvels of obstacles and fun. There's a level editor for creative types to spend extra time with.

Sid Meier's Pirates!
Originally an iPad only release, Sid Meier's Pirates! is now available for the iPhone. It's not an Universal app, unfortunately, but if the iPad version is anything to go by, this will be a great conversion of a fantastic action strategy game. Indulge the pirate in you and set sail on one of 27 ships.

Shark Dash
Shark Dash might look like yet another cute physics puzzler but it's a fun concept: taking control of bathtub toys. Yes, seriously. Sharkee and his group of toy sharks have to fend off the evil rubber duckies while saving Sally, Sharkee's girlfriend. For the player, this means a fun romp through 96 levels of simple yet addictive gameplay.

Marvel's The Avengers: Iron Man – MARK VII
Comic book and movie fans might have already noticed that there's the little matter of the new The Avengers film coming out very soon. So, what better way to get excited than with MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS: IRON MAN – MARK VII? It's an interactive comic book telling the tale of Tony Stark/Iron Man's mission to upgrade his armor. 15+ pages explain all, alongside a memorable soundtrack and plenty of interactive touches.
