New App: Xfinity/Comcast Continues to Confuse Customers With a New App That Does The Same as the Last App

Xfinity / Comcast has released a new TV Viewer app that does parts of what you would want it to do. That goes along with the other Xfinity TV app that also does parts of what you would want it to do. Sigh. Pardon me for the following only slightly applicable rant.

Comcast is in the middle of an identity crisis right now and we are forced to go along for the ride. They seem to do everything in twos now. Comcast and Xfinity cable services. Xfinity TV and Xfinity TV Player apps to watch different parts of the same catalog of streaming TV. Two different streaming services – On Demand and Streampix. And why do they own NBC?

My head is spinning. Which app do I use to watch which show? Of course then there’s Hulu, and Netflix, and….

Did I perhaps, maybe mention how awesome Sling box is?

The future of TV on demand is undoubtedly live TV on any platform that you see fit. If someone wants to watch TV on their iPad, they should be able to watch anything they want at any time. Comcast today is taking the first step towards this TV watching future with their Xfinity TV app.

Their press release is a bit tough to follow, but from the looks of it, Comcast is planning for customers to be able to watch “live news, TV shows and movies in their homes whenever they want.” While I’m not sure if this means that I can only watch live TV from selected networks (sports is curiously omitted), but anything live from the app would be an improvement and a step in the right direction.

In the coming weeks though, Comcast is adding a “play now” feature to the Xfinity TV app which will add “nearly 3,000 hours of On Demand content, including popular movies and hit TV shows, either in the home or on-the-go, including anywhere there is a wireless connection.” In the near future, they have plans to add “thousands” of additional content choices to the iPad, making it a fairly comprehensive on-demand source.

“Live streaming and the play now feature on our Xfinity TV app are two important pieces of our strategy to deliver any content to any device, any time,” said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman & CEO of Comcast Corporation. “Comcast has a series of upcoming online enhancements and app releases that are part of a much larger effort to reinvent how customers interact with their entertainment on TV, online and on mobile devices.”

Be sure to pick up the Xfinity app if you are a Comcast owner (it’s free!), and have fun with the coming glut of on demand content. If anything, you’ll be happy to have the coolest TV remote on the block.

Sure your iPhone or iPad can act as a GPS, eReader, or game center but can you control your television with it? As of today, you can in fact, so long as you’re a Comcast Xfinity subscriber and own a compatible digital service. Or, you own an AppleTV, but that’s another article. Comcast has launched its new Xfinity app which allows users to browse digital content, watch On Demand videos and even change the channel right from their iOS device. How jealous will your friends be when you whip out your iPhone to peruse the cable guide and turn on the big game?

Right now some folks may be wondering why they should care, considering the fact that they can just use their regular TV remote to browse their cable content. The major appeal of this new app lies in both new search tools and future promise. With the app, users can type in the name of the show they want to watch and Xfinity will instantly retrieve all the relevant listings. This new approach is so much easier than randomly scrolling through channels and times looking for one particular piece of programming. Also cool is the ability to instantly invite friends to watch content with you, so no one ever has to worry about missing Glee ever again.

Comcast is also promising big things in the future, including expanded remote functionality and even video streaming right from your iOS device. Having access to the On Demand library instantly on your device will be a great addition, and if we could watch some of our favorite shows right on the iPad or iPhone without paying extra to download them that would be incredible. We don’t yet know what exactly Comcast has in mind for the future, but we’re excited to see where the service goes.

The app is available now and it’s free so if you’re a Comcast subscriber what are you waiting for? This is something definitely worth getting excited over.
