Square closing yet another mobile game? Who could have seen this coming?

If you have read any of my articles touching even tangentially on Square Enix, then you will know where this is going. Also, the headline is a giveaway. Yes, once again, the giants are killing a mobile game; this time, it is Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis. And news just in, the sky continues to be blue, and the grass green.

Since launching, Ever Crisis has delved into the world of Final Fantasy VII, offering us everything from a recap of the story to new scenarios. Chief amongst which were the young Sephiroth stories, no doubt. We even saw the return of Dirge of Cerberus, in a fashion, at least. Side note, it's quite a fun shooter starring Vincent if you have a chance to play it.

Unfortunately, this series of stories was not enough to save Ever Crisis, as Square have officially announced the pulling of the plug. Check it out if you like, but it is the usual pithy “We can’t continue providing the experience we want to for our players”. Or rather, “We didn't make enough money out of this.”

This was slightly more expected than the 100 other Square closures

To be fair, it had to be somewhat expected that Ever Crisis would have a short shelf life, specifically less than three years. As great as Final Fantasy 7 is, and the remakes on that note, there's only so much nostalgia you can mine. Frankly, who cares what Sephiroth did as a soldier? Crisis Core already showed us the good stuff in more depth.

As for specifics, service will terminate on October 6th, so you have a short time to say goodbye. However, there might be an issue with Red Crystals. Sales have stopped, but the notice mentions that refunds for already purchased Crystals are for Taiwan residents only. It seems that closure is not enough for Square; they have to stick the knife in.

For those who want to enjoy another Square mobile property before its inevitable end, you can check out Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy on Android and iOS. Tidus was released recently, but still no sign of Squall. Square just can’t get anything right.
