Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy launches next month with a shocking lack of Squall

Final Fantasy 8 is the best in the series, and Squall is one of the best characters. I shall take no questions.

Oh boy, Square is at it again, creating another mobile game to close after people get invested. And I am going to fall for it, again. Opera Omnia had the Dissidia name but not the gameplay, but soon, we will get a proper entry into the series with Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy. Incidentally, Opera Omnia was also shut down.

Just saying.

Dissidia Duellum is bringing us the 3v3 arena battles that we know and love. If you haven’t heard of them, basically, Square wanted to make a load of money, so they stuffed all the mainline titles' most recognisable heroes into one game. And then took away the RPG system in favour of knocking the hell out of each other. It's really fun.

The story will again follow heroes from each instalment, but this time, they will gather in modern-day Tokyo. Just like Sora, when Kingdom Hearts 4 arrives, in probably 20 years. Everyone is in modern clothes, and I think Kain landed in a fancy dress shop with what he has on. Also, Rinoa seems to have brought Angelo, which is adorable.

While the combat sounds like it will keep that real-time action element, the goal is a little different. Usually, Dissidia has you battling another team of Final Fantasy characters. Duellum, however, will have both teams of three racing to see who can defeat a boss the fastest. Honestly, as long as I get to play as Squall, it could be a knitting simulator. Although he seems to be worrying absent thus far.

Instead, you can control the likes of Prompto, Cloud, and Krile. Also, incredibly out of leftfield, XIV is represented by Gaia. A character exclusive to an entirely optional raid storyline. There must be millions of players of the game who have never met her, but Square picked her over Alisaie or Y’shtola.

I weirdly respect this insane choice.

Anyway, each character will have their own roles to get used to, and you can customise them in a huge manner of outfits should you wish. There will also be music tracks to collect from Final Fantasy’s massive backlog of absolute hits, which is amazing.

Pre-registration has kicked off ahead of its March, yes, next month, release date, so pop over to the App Store and Google Play so you don’t miss out.
