Maybe it's just because their catalogue is right in my wheelhouse, but I am struggling to think of a more prolific mobile porter than Playdigious. They have turned Portion Permit, Little Nightmares, and Dead Cells into mobile masterpieces, to name a few. And now, they have added Sea of Stars to their repertoire.

Sea of Stars tells the tale of Valere and Zale, two Children of Solstice who can combine their magical abilities to wield Eclipse Magic. This happens to be the only force that can combat the Dwellers, evil monsters conjured by the Fleshmancer. In true RPG fashion, you will gather some friends and go kick some butt.

This rear-based offense is done with the help of a rather interactive combat system. It is turn-based; however, you can boost the power of your strikes or guard against your foes' attacks, with time button inputs to keep you engaged. There is also an interesting “lock” mechanic, where you can cancel foes' special attacks by smacking them with the correct type of attack.

I am a fan of all turn-based combat, but it's nice to see it get mixed up a bit.

The sign of a great game is a fun minigame

It is not just combat that will keep your attention. Sea of Stars also sports a minigame named Wheels. We won’t go too deep into strategy here, but it is a game where you battle foes using two figurines and a healthy dose of RNG. A fun diversion from the evil wrecking of the world.

And speaking of the world, Sea of Stars is another one of those games that I believe should have been on mobile first. Whilst the graphics are beautiful, the 16-bit style fits perfectly on a mobile device. And they are complemented wonderfully with a score composed in part by Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger fame.

Sea of Stars can be purchased on the App Store and Google Play for $8.99 until April 14th, when it will rise to $9.99.
