Rust Mobile doesn't need to exist

 

Rust Mobile is getting a closed beta, but not anytime soon. The popular survival game announced the mobile version's closed beta at Gamescon, but don't get too excited yet.

Rust Mobile was announced last month, bringing the same gritty gameplay to phones. This includes gathering resources, building bases, and brutal PvP combat: everything that made Rust a phenomenon (with gamers that like to make alliances and backstab). Licensed by Facepunch Studios, you can definitely expect the mobile version to carry on the social dynamics and hardcore gameplay of the OG. 

Well, in theory. 

Do we really need a mobile version of Rust?

I am not convinced that we need Rust on our phones. I know everything is moving to mobile (and I support that, look at the site we're on), but it's sorta like people who claim Tekken 8 should be on the Nintendo Switch 2. I like Nintendo - but do we need a fighting game on the Switch 2? No. 

The Rust community is already pretty skeptical, wondering if developers will give in to the pressure other mobile games experience - like brightly colored, anime-inspired cosmetics and crossovers. And others are wondering if the playerbase will get younger and less serious. And will there be pay-to-win elements and microtransactions everywhere? 

I love a good mobile game, but will this be a good mobile game? Guess we'll have to see how the closed beta is... Whenever that is. 

When is the Rust Mobile closed beta?

The Rust Mobile closed beta will be arriving in early November 2025. Around 30,000 players will be given the opportunity to take part, but there are some limitations. At least initially.

First, players must be from North America, Western Europe, and "select regions in Asia" that haven't been shared just yet. It will also be available in English, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai (which gives you an idea of the possible countries). 

Rust Mobile will be available on iOS, Android, and tablets.
