After months of exclusivity to PC and Console, mobile gamers are finally able to get their hands on the acclaimed visual novel The Wreck. Coming from developers The Pixel Hut, the minds behind the Bafta-nominated Bury Me, My Love, The Wreck is a realistic portrayal of grief and the importance of reflection.

You take on the role of Junon, a failed screenwriter who is suddenly called out of the blue by the hospital, informing her that her estranged mother has had a brain aneurysm. Following a day of grief, intense conversations, and arguments, Junon leaves and is involved in a crash, ending her story. However, all things can change. The Wreck will see you delve into Junon’s past through ten unique memories, each with its own navigation method. Through these windows, you will uncover the cause of her trauma, understand how it affects her, and then you can relive that fateful day using these new tools to unlock new dialogue options, potentially saving Junon and mending her fractured relationships.

As you might have noticed, this isn’t a lighthearted romp through a fantasy land. The Pixel Hunt has created a very realistic and mature narrative centred on grief, survival, and family. Within this story of loss and distress, however, there is a message of hope, understanding, and the value of healing your past to embrace your future.

The biggest thing to note here, however, is that The Wreck does not shy away from the darker narratives. The story covers, of course, grief and death, but there are also parts of self-herm and toxic relationships, so if any of those are a bit too real for you, tread lightly. If not, then strap in for an emotional journey.

The Wreck is available to download now from the App Store and Google Play.
