I am going to take a break from bringing you mobile news peppered with just god-awful jokes to remind everyone that the world is burning. And we like the world, it's where all our games are. Teaming up with Playing for the Planet Alliance, Jagex and Games by Malcs have signed up for the 5th Edition of Green Game Jam with Melvor Idle.

For those who haven’t played it, Melvor Idle is an idle game inspired by, surprise surprise, Jagexs’ own Runescape. Imagine an MMO complete with all its skills but you don’t have to spend hours grinding to level up. You can click your way to victory, or you can set your hero off, throw your phone away, and let them level up as you live your life.

The Green Game Jam is kicking off today and will last until September 30th, with Jagex and Games by Malcs introducing a new activity to their game, dubbed Melvor Active. This is a real-world activity focusing on three of the game's skills, encouraging playing to develop lifelong sustainable habits.

These skills are Farming, Cooking, and Crafting, things that anyone can learn with a little effort. Each week of the Jam will highlight one of these skills, with the aim to get players thinking just a little more sustainably. Not everyone has access to a huge farm or a manufacturing plant, but there are still some small steps.

Activities to take part in include composting scraps of foods, collecting seeds from cooking to regrow produce and trying recipes inspired by those in Melvor Idle. Those more crafty can try to recycle old materials into something new. Melvor is acting on research that shows small, incremental changes motivate people to turn this into long-term activities.

Melvor Idle is available to download from the App Store and Google Play, and for this month the developers are encouraging players to share their participation in the Green Game Jam on social media with the #GreenGameJam tag.
