Get ready for a gritty look at the reality of war in War Mongrels
Destructive Creations have brought their isometric real-time tactics game, War Mongrels, to iOS. Since its release on PC, the game has received a lot of praise for its historically accurate representation of World War II, as well as for its immersive strategic gameplay.
War Mongrels is set during World War II on the Eastern Front, perhaps the grisliest theatres of war in history. You take control of a group of defectors from the Third Reich, as they sneak through the war-torn surrounding, each with their own special skills that will serve you well in battles. The scope of strategy that War Mongrels offers in its gameplay is truly a sight to behold. As you are a small group of renegades traipsing through now hostile territory, you can’t expect to be able to go into an all-out firefight and survive. Instead, you will need to plan your attacks carefully or use the environment, and there are a lot of ways to do this.
Enemies can be snuck up on by sticking to the shadows, pulling off the ever-popular sneak attack, or you can go a bit more in-depth. Pause the action and issue separate commands to each of your squadmates, and watch your perfectly planned ambush play out. Or, if you aren't worried about drawing attention, you can use the destructible environment and drop buildings on people's heads.

Another key point of the game is its story. Set on the Eastern Front you will live the grisly reality of the war, travelling through prison blocks, mass graves and concentration camps. The animated cutscenes help bring to life the real-world accounts of war survivors and historians that the narrative is based on.
Destructive Creation strived for accuracy in every point, drafting in history consultants Michal Flont, Jack Cuccurullo and a variety of independent historians worldwide. This authenticity ranges from the uniforms and regional terrain, all the way down to news articles. As engaging as the gameplay is, you can’t gloss over the setting, a balance that the developers are well aware of.
War Mongrels is available to download from the App Store for $39.99.
