I think it might be an understatement to say people enjoy a good roguelike deckbuilder. Inscryption did well a few years ago, and everyone damn near lost their minds for Balatro last year.

So it was only a matter of time before we saw more with their own twists, and now we have an offering from Pepperbox Studios, named Dice of Kalma.

It was a lovely day, but before you’ve even had your cereal, you have only gone and flipping died like a ruddy fool. Now you find yourself in the underworld, stood in front of Kalma, the Finnish god of death, which is strange as you are neither Finnish nor religious. Luckily, though, he has a soft spot for dice and is apparently having a slow day, so he challenges you to a game for your freedom.

This will, of course, develop into many, many more games, as by virtue of being a rougelike, you are going to fail a lot. But Kalma takes a liking to you, so you can just enjoy the ride. As you might have shrewdly deduced from the title, there is nary a card in sight. Instead, your deck will be built of dice, like some kind of D&D player. You also collect Skulls, which I can also see D&D players doing.

These skulls will increase your score depending on the dice you roll, and the aim of the game is to get those lovely high numbers. To help with this, you can also upgrade the points a hand gives you, such as High Dice, Pair, Four of a Kind, and Straight.

I don’t mean to be reductive, but let's speak plain; it is effectively Balatro with dice. Maybe lightning shall strike twice.
