All the glorious memories of the adventures of ApotheTerry and AlcheMutt are flowing back

I believe that Epic Games has gotten Publisher Playdigious in a headlock and is going through all their pockets for their games. Little Nightmares was free for mobiles two weeks ago, and this time, they are giving away Cozy Lifestyle/RPG Potion Permit, which is an excellent game.

Potion Permit sees your character move to the town of Moonbury with their trust companion, a delightfully fluffy dog, to become their new alchemist. Your predecessor caused all manner of issues on the island, so it is down to you to rebuild the reputation of your institution, and also cure everyone's bad knees.

I reviewed Potion Permit back in 2024, and I was a big fan. It felt like a very ambitious game, and for the most part, it really delivered. Sure, there were one or two niggles with the controls, but you can look past them.

Plus, I named the dog AlcheMutt, and I shall forever love him.

Just another day of taking monsters' bones

The gameplay loop takes place across two main areas. First, you head out into the wilderness to gather components and slay monsters for their precious parts in a basic combat system. You then head home and play a hundred minigames to diagnose patients, craft potions, and heal them.

Given that this is a Harvest Moon-like game, you can also grow relationships with the townsfolk. My favourite aspect of this is that AlcheMutt can lead you directly to any NPC you have met before, saving so much hassle. Then it is the usual friendship-building mechanics: shoving a million gifts into their arms. I also wrote a guide covering this, multi-faceted over here.

One of the best parts of Potion Permit is the stamina system. You would think gathering and stabbing things would have you in bed for 2 PM, but it is balanced fantastically. There is enough time and energy in the day to do whatever you like.

This being free for Android and iOS on the Epic Game Store is a definite steal; do not miss out.
