The Lord of the Rings series shows us what happens to enterprising Hobbits such as Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Merry and Pippin if they don’t stay in their lane and decide to leave the Shire. It looks bloody dangerous, which is why September 23rd is an important date thanks to the announced launch of Tales of the Shire.

To give it the full name that no one will use, Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings Game places you in the gigantic feet of a Hobbit living an idyllic life in The Shire. You start by creating your character, complete with personality moods and, amusing, foot-hair styles, before being released to your home of Bywater.

If you know anything about Hobbits you can guess what this whole game will revolve around. You are all correct; food. It will be up to you to cook delicious meals to share with other characters to grow relationships and start putting your village on the map as the jewel of the Shire.

Make full use of your customisable garden to grow your own ingredients and keep your pantry stocked. Of course, you can’t make a gourmet meal with just vegetables, so you will need a few more skills under your belt. Strike up a conversation with a neighbour and see if they have anything to trade, or head over to the market and spend your hard-earned gold.

For those who want more solitary ways to gather ingredients, you can pick up a rod and start fishing by the stream. The adventurous few can even strike out into the fields and forests to scavenge a host of berries and mushrooms. After collecting a bounty of resources, head back to the kitchen and prepare for the challenge of a lifetime; pleasing hungry Hobbits.

Each recipe you can make has a series of steps to complete to rack up the star value, which will lead to a house of satisfied friends, all eager to stay for that most important meal of the day; Second Breakfast. And all without a Nazgul or Ring in sight.

To play Tales of the Shire on mobile when it launches on March 25th 2025 you will need a subscription to Netflix, available on both Google Play and the App Store. No doubt they would have hiked the price again by then.
