Minit Games scores $2 million to create Instant Game app that recommends games
Are we all really so pressed for time that we can’t wait for quality to load?
There is a Hamburg-based studio named Minit Games, which gathered $2 million in investment to fund its projects and growth. Now, with all the turmoil going on with job cuts and studios shutting down, it is fantastic to see one growing. It is never a bad thing when a gaming company is thriving, let's say that real quick.
There is one problem with this, however, and it is a big one. That is the core concept. They are setting themselves up as a feed-first gaming platform, which is pushing instant-play games. Pretty much what it says on the tin; no storefronts or downloads, simply click and play. Well, you need to download their app.
Has anybody actually been asking for this?
As you might have already guessed, I have some issues.First off, instant games are rubbish. Big praise to anyone with the skills and dedication to make a game, but I have yet to find an instant-play title that isn’t super basic. Not only that, you trade downloads for a game that is rampant with ads. They border on unplayable, with the amount of ad breaks and floating text bubbles there are.
Second, the Minit Game app uses a recommendation engine to offer you games it thinks you will like. These days, everything does that. Play Store, Xbox, Spotify, YouTube; you can’t escape it. And I am fine with that, but I can see that some people will be uneasy with yet another thing tracking our activity.
But the main point of my problem is just the quality. Yes, games take time to load, but are we really that bothered by the wait? Especially to the point where we would turn to a revolving conveyor belt of quickly pushed out rubbish full to the brim with adverts.
Maybe I just haven’t found the right Instant Game, but I think I will just give Warframe that little time to load and have a lot more fun, thank you, Minit Games.
