The 5 best iPhone games like Zelda

Posted by Harry Slater on September 10th, 2018

There's no denying that the Zelda games are brilliant. And there's also no denying that there isn't one of them on mobile. That might change, since Nintendo has decided to try and make the move into gaming on the go, but right now if you want a Zelda-like experience on your phone, you're going to need to look at less official channels.

So we thought we'd save you the hassle and write up a list of the five best games like Zelda for iPhone. These are games that capture the spirit of adventure of Nintendo's classic adventures. Some of them owe more to recent entries, like The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild. Others are a little more retro in feel, taking ideas from the earlier, SNES and NES iterations.

Whichever one of them you choose though, we can guarantee you're going to have a brilliant time. If you've got your own recommendations for games that scratch the Zelda itch, then let us know in the comments below. And make sure you check out all the other lists on 148Apps by clicking here.

Oceanhorn- download for iPhone

This one wears its Zelda inspiration on its sleeve, its jerkin, its boots, and pretty much everything else it's got on. But when a game is this well put together, and offers this much adventure, you can't really complain.

You're exploring islands in the titular sea, working your way through enemies, puzzles, and plenty of other challenges. Everything is painted with beautiful bright hues. It's like a summer vacation, but with monster murder thrown in for good measure.

Ittle Dew - download for iPhone

Where Oceanhorn is very definitely in the modern-Zelda camp, Ittle Dew fits snugly into the retro-Zelda camp. It's a top-down dungeon crawler that tries to capture some of the magic of Nintendo's other flagship series.

And it just about manages it as well. There are a few sections that don't quite reach the heights of their inspirations, but for the most part Ittle Dew is a warm and funny experience that rose-tinted players are going to absolutely adore.

Cat Quest - download for iPhone

Ittle Dew doesn't do much to play around with the formula of classic Zelda, but Cat Quest does. For starters, all of the characters in the game are cats, which always makes things a thousand times better.

There's a whole world to explore here, and it's all presented in some of the most gorgeous cartoon visuals you're likely to see on your phone this year. But there's a meaty game here too, with plenty to do, find, and kill.

Legend of the Skyfish - download for iPhone

This one's probably the closest you're going to get to a SNES-style Zelda on your phone for now. It's a lovingly crafted homage that isn't afraid to move away from the game that inspired it and create something new.

It's one of those games that manages to be familiar and fresh at the same time. It's not as slavish in its adherence to the Zelda template, and if anything that makes it feel more like a new Zelda game than a direct copy ever would.

Horn - download for iPhone

A bit of a controversial choice for the last game on the list, but if you pay attention to the shape of Horn, and the way it leads you through its world, you're going to find an awful lot of Zelda there. And that's no bad thing.

The game is getting on a bit now, but its mixture of Zelda and Infinity Blade still holds up. It's definitely one of the most intriguing magical adventures on the App Store, and the way it eschews the grit and grime of plenty of other mobile action games makes it stand out from the crowd.
