Disney Speedstorm finally remembers Disney has a franchise all about racing, adds Pixar's Cars
The fact that Lightning McQueen wasn’t the poster child of this game from the jump is mindboggling
If the characters of Final Fantasy 7 were invited to a shooting contest, they would send Barrett and Vincent, the gun wielders. That is why Dirge of Cerberus, the shooter spin-off, focused on Vincent, instead of, say, Tifa. The logic is painfully obvious. So why has it taken Disney Speedstorm, a racing game, this long to introduce the characters from Pixar's Cars?
Three years since early access, and the inclusion of Mowgli, a character who canonically has never even seen a car, and the Piston Cup update is finally righting this huge logical gap. We will be able to hit the track with Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater, and Cruz Ramirez.
Lightning McQueen and crew join Disney Speedstorm
It won’t surprise you to learn Lightning and Cruz are Speedsters. Lightning's passive lets him drift without losing much speed, whilst his Pit Stop ability gives him a speed boost, and launching tyres onto the track to slow down foes. Cruz also gets a speed boost from her ability, but if an ally also drives into it, they too get a boost. So it is teamwork vs a solo star.
Tow Mater, meanwhile, is a dependable Defender, being able to use his tow hooks to pull a car backwards whilst propelling himself forward. He can also litter the track with tractors to slow down his opponents, which is pretty funny. You will also be able to top up your crew with the likes of Red, Sheriff, Finn McMissle, and Sterling.
Our mid-season racers let you get an early look at Mabel from the upcoming Hoppers film, as well as adding Go-Go Tomago from Big Hero 6. Or you can go into overdrive with the new Supercharged Racers. This includes Daisy Duck, Dash and Mrs Incredible, Captain Gantu, and Dr. Finklestein from The Nightmare Before Christmas. The idea of him racing really tickles me.
Disney Speedstorm is available from the App Store and Google Play.
