Japanese programmer Yuji Naka is best known for leading the team that created the original Sonic The Hedgehog. He’s moved on from the speedy blue hero since then, launching his own company based in Tokyo – Prope Games. Legend of Coin is the developer’s latest project, and is totally different from the platformer he’s known for. It fuses the fun of coin pushers with the addictive quality of monster collecting.
Gameplay in Legend of Coin revolves around a coin pusher covered with silver pennies. Throw more coins on the shelf to nudge the ones closest off and into your wallet. These can then be lobbed back in, or used to purchase bonuses from the shop.
“Where do the monsters come into it?” I hear you ask. At the top of the screen there’s an enemy creature waiting to fight you. Monsters drop amid the coins and can be collected, then summoned to take on the enemy above. Collecting multiples of the same monster is no problem, as combining them levels that monster up, making it more powerful each time. There are over 200 to collect in total, varying in rarity.
Special coins also appear amongst the silver coins. These provide various limited bonuses, from special attacks to additional attack power. When you defeat an enemy, it triggers a flurry of extra coins for you to gather. Some enemies also drop Magic Orbs, which can be collected for a jackpot of coins.
