You’ve come this far, so why are you still playing for free? Come on - you must be able to rustle up a few bucks to splash out on your new addiction.

Cut back on the drugs and alcohol for a couple of days and put the savings towards lovely green gems. Before you go crazy though, read the tips below and make the most of what you’ve got.

Spend money if you want!

If you enjoy the game, and have the money to spare, then don’t feel bad if you purchase some gems. Sure, free stuff is great - who doesn’t love a good freebie. But do you really want to grind it out in the lower leagues while some 10 year old with a rich parent destroys you time after time? No one wants that.

Don’t let people shame you into thinking that ‘spending money on IAP is foolish’. It’s not necessary, but someone’s got to pay for all those lovely coders at Supercell, and it might just be you.

As a side note, I’ve heard that the top players have spent around $20,000 to get their cards maxed out, so don’t feel bad at that drunken purchase after your 10th defeat in a row.

Don’t buy chests, buy gold & cards

It’s as it sounds - when I first started I bought some gems and immediately got excited and bought a ‘Super Magical Chest’. Yes, it’s highly exciting. Yes it gives you loads and loads of cards. No, it’s not good value for money. While it looks like you get a lot with these chests, ultimately all you’re getting is a lot of cards you might never use.

A much better way of using gems is to buy gold. Cards periodically (every 8 hours) appear for sale in the shop. The common cards seem to be around 3 gold, while the Epic ones are 2,000 (this is on Arena 4 – it may be different depending on the arena you’re currently on). This means that you can buy the exact cards you want, and don’t forget that every so often you’ll win a big chest.

A Redditor delved into the game code and discovered that the chests you win are on a cycle, and you’ll get a certain number of chest types every 240 chests. It’s very complicated, but it seems like if you win a battle, you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting a Gold Chest, 1 in 100 chance of getting a Magical Chest, and (deep breath) a 1 in 1,000 chance of getting a Super Magical chest. Better get some more games under your belt!

Another impatient trait of mine when first playing was to spend the gems I’d bought on opening chests early. Again, it feels good but it doesn’t make sense. Be patient, and the rewards will come.

Plus you’ll have a lot more gems to spend on gold. Don’t be like me and waste your purchase - it might be what Supercell wants but it’s not a good long term strategy.
