Is there a bigger franchise than The Elder Scrolls? Morrowind. Oblivion. Skyrim. Say any of these and watch people be bowled over by the sheer influence of the name. Even if the Oblivion remastered was awful. And yet, it appears this name is not a gold pass to fame.

Just ask The Elder Scrolls: Blades, whilst you still can.

If you are unaware, because all the fanfare evaporated immediately upon release, Blades first graced our mobile screens back in 2019. It was to be the Elder Scrolls in your pocket, but the developers forgot everything that makes Skyrim and Oblivion great. What we got was a boiled-down dungeon crawler.

There was no great big wilderness to explore, and you couldn’t even sneak. There goes 80% of player builds. Instead, Blades railroaded you into combat encounters, and that was the main selling point. Let’s be completely honest here, the combat in The Elder Scrolls is not mind-blowing. Blades was not a hit.

It was a subpar game, but it is still a shame to see it go

And that brings us to today. Bethesda has now delisted Blades from storefronts, ahead of a full server closure on June 30th. They have even burnt the website already for added insult. Whilst it might not have been a great game, it is always sad to see months or years of developers' work evaporate in an instant. Plus, it probably had some diehard fans.

At least these fans can enjoy everything Blade had to offer for the next few months. If you still have it on your phone, you can now go on a spending spree. Everything in the store will be available for the princely sum of 1 Gem or 1 Sigil each. Even better, Bethesda is chucking a heap of Gems and Sigils to all players as a final thank you for the support.

While it is most certainly not the same, you can try to fill that hole in your heart with another combat-heavy entry in a different legendary series; Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy
