A while ago, back in ye olde days of May, Sega disappointed fans of a certain blue mammal with the delay of Sonic Rumble, around a week prior to its supposed launch date. It is a shame, sure, but I genuinely prefer when developers put their hands up and say, “We need time to get it right."

Well, time they did get, and soon we shall see if get it right they have, as Sonic Rumble has received a new release date. Kind of. We know it will be this November, but no precise date. So, throw a dart at your calendar. Which is probably also your phone nowadays. I didn’t think that through.

In the past six months of extra development time, the team put their effort into three key areas. The first is better core gameplay. There have been a ton of new stages and game modes added, as well as a refinement of the characters' signature skills to bamboozle your foes. You can also join your own Crew and take part in limited events for special prizes.

Next was streamlining.

The new player onboarding process we reworked to get us into the action faster, and there is a much-improved user interface for ease of navigation. Finally, an update of the progression and reward system. The team says it makes every unlock feel meaningful and makes upgrades less of a chore. That one will be the most interesting to see.

I don’t want to have to rank up 20 times to unlock a simple hat or something.

There is another benefit to this delay, unintended as it may be. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was released last month and has performed incredibly well, which could hopefully lead to a lot more players catching Sonic fever and downloading Rumble. Party games are at their most fun with a full lobby, after all.

You can pre-register for Sonic Rumble now on the App Store and Google Play.
