You might be busy sending your hulking Dark Knight into the midst of battle in Webzen’s other recent release: the long-anticipated MU Origin 2. But for something a little different, the South Korean publisher has launched First Hero. Released today worldwide – except for China, the Middle East and Japan – this real-time strategy game for Android and iOS is all about collecting characters and winning wars.

The characters you collect, or rather ‘summon’ in the tried-and-true MMO fashion, are a mix of historical and folkloric figures from around the planet. There are more than 50 of these heroes up for grabs, and that number is sure to grow. Apart from these nods to the real world, everything takes place in a fantasy realm where there are monsters to be slayed, kingdoms to be conquered and alliances to be forged.

Each hero in the game has certain statistical advantages and disadvantages, but these can be heavily influenced through upgrades using soul stones. Meanwhile, your troops – lead by your chosen heroes – can also be enhanced using Hero’s Rune, Soul Stone or equipment. So even if your legendary hero faces off against the same legendary hero in a sort of The Double-style scenario, it’s unlikely to mean stalemate; how you’ve chosen to invest your resources will make a big difference.

Heroes need a home, which is why each player has their own domain to develop and a castle to upkeep. This city-building element of the game is essential to competing with your rivals, so don’t get too caught up in the hero summoning.

First Hero has a range of gameplay options. For hardcore fans of PvP, there’s the dedicated Arena. For co-operative play, there are Alliance Domain Conquests and Expedition. And, for a break from the multiplayer aspect, there’s a single player Adventure Mode. All that on top of the various in-game rewards and events lined up means you’ll keep coming back.

Why not take a break from MU Origin 2 and give First Hero a go? You can download it now from the App Store and Google Play.
