Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia

It's that most special of days. There's a new Final Fantasy game on the App Store. It's called Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, and you're right, that is a bit of a mouthful. But what is the game? And what are you going to be doing in it?

Well that's where this guide comes in. We're going to tell you everything you need to know about the game to make sure you're up to speed before you jump in. We'll be covering the game in more depth in the coming days, but if you don't know your Dissidia from your Dimensions, this is the page you're looking for.

So what is it?

The game is a free to play RPG. In it you're playing as a party of characters from different parts of the Final Fantasy universe. They've all been drawn to a world that's being overrun by monsters. These monsters are coming in through Torsions, apparently, and it's up to you to close them before everything goes too far up the creek.

To that end you're taking part in turn-based battles with the beasts. You've got a party size of three, so juggling your heroes and making sure your using the right ones for the right situation is key to succeeding.

How does the battle system work?

It's going to be pretty familiar to anyone who's played any of the older FF games. There's an order bar that shows you when it's going to be your turn. Then you can select one from a number of different actions when you get a go.

The big difference here is the Bravery bar. Both you and your foes have these. You need Bravery to do damage, but you can also hack away your opponent's to make them more vulnerable. There are other twists and tricks too, but we'll cover them properly in another guide.

Once either side has been reduced to zero HP, the battle is over. To begin with, that's definitely going to be you. The first few hours of the game are definitely skewed to make you push as far into the experience as you can.

How about the currencies?

There are a couple of them - Gems and Gil. Gems can be used to draw new weapons to use in the campaign. You can also spend them on a variety of upgrades that give you more of an edge in battle like extra armour slots.

There doesn't actually seem to be anything you can spend your Gil on at the moment. Whether or not there are in-game shops deeper into the experience than I've got I'm not sure, but if you know, let us know in the comments.

You also have Link Bells, which you spend to fight in events.

How do I get the characters?

Interestingly, just through playing the game. Right now there are no characters in the gacha system, just weapons. Slog through enough of the experience and you're going to unlock the whole set, which is a pretty nice touch.

Anything else I should know?

Yup, you're going to need a decent internet connection to play this one. It won't save your data if the connection drops, and there always seems to be something downloading in the background too. Probably one that's best suited to playing when you're on WiFi rather than mobile data.
