What a week it has been here at 148Apps towers. We've been swamped, which means we're a bit late letting you know what last week's game of the week was. Don't worry though, we're here now, and we can reveal that Grimvalor takes away the prize.

It was a pretty tight run thing this week, but we're pretty confident that the correct game has won. Grimvalor might look a lot like a Dark Souls clone at first glance, but dig a bit deeper and you'll discover something really rather special lurking in the grim fantasy aesthetic. And we love special things here at 148Apps.

The game is an action platformer that references the glory days of that genre more than it harks back to From's gloomy masterpiece. Yes, you're going to die a lot, and yes the game is going to tell you in quite simple terms when you do, but there's as much metroidvania here as there is Souls-like.

You're exploring a world that's filled with corridors you can't get down. You need to find the skills to get past them, and that's no mean feat. The platforming is solid, and the combat is balanced at just the right side of the difficulty line. It's tough, but you've only got yourself to blame when something goes wrong.

Grimvalor is exactly the sort of game we need more of on the App Store. It's premium, it's brilliantly well put-together, and it doesn't hold your hand when it doesn't need to. If that's piqued your interest, then click here to buy Grimvalor from the App Store right this second.
