Back in the days of the Winter War, when holiday songs assaulted our senses and we all froze to popsicles, Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition solved all our problems with that universal of solutions, dinosaurs. This week marks ten years since the original Survival Evolved launched, and to mark the occasion, Genesis Part 1 makes its way to mobile.

Now, personally, I dislike it when technology gets involved in a good fantasy or prehistoric setting. Final Fantasy XIV is ruining their world doing it, and when you start getting turrets and grenade launches in Ark, I am kind of done. Now to fake enthusiasm for a tech-heavy expansion!

In Genesis Part 1, you awaken to find yourself in a strange virtual simulation. Happily, though, you get a robotic companion named HLN-A. Together, you will follow a storyline that takes you across deadly swamps, vicious volcanoes, and low-gravity lunar terrain because why not? You can jump on Oxygen Vents and get launched. Imagine leading a dinosaur to that.

The locales aren’t the only things out to get you, as there is a suite of new beasts to tangle with. Marvel at the majestic space whale, befriend the giant sea turtles, and scream at, then flee from the magma-breathing Magmasaurus. Or better yet, tame it and rule the world, because no one can compete against the sheer might of a dinosaur with indigestion.

There are some restrictions to bear in mind with this expansion, though. With the exception of Astrocetus and Gasbags, you can’t fly creatures. Also, the Tek Chestpieces’ jetpack is disabled. Presumably, the dev team spent a lot of time crafting those avalanches, so you will appreciate them as they bury you! Also, your Tek Leggings won’t have super speed, presumably for the same reasons.

Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition is available now on the App Store and Google Play.
