When a week starts off with New Year’s Eve, it’s bound to be a good one, and this week was no exception at 148Apps.com. Site founder Jeff Scott started us off with a bang by saying, “We are proud to announce the nominees for the fifth annual Best App Ever Awards. The awards that celebrate the best apps available, not just the best selling. This year we saw an amazing response with over 715,000 nominations submitted for 6,755 unique apps!
Voting is now open and will remain open through January 31st, 2013. Winners will be announced in February and details on that are to come.”
Want to see the complete list of nominees, and get in on the voting? Head to 148Apps.
Over at GiggleApps.com, Amy Solomon took a closer look at Hansel & Gretel: Lost, saying, “Hansel & Gretel: Lost is a well crafted re-telling of this classic story for iPad, wonderfully illustrated with animations as well as including top-notch narration, music and sound effects. Auto-play is also an option as well as silencing the narration to read this book by oneself.
It is easy to tell from the first page that this app is something special. The illustrations are lush with color and beautiful to look at with a marbled textured style that I always find appealing. Every element in this book is at a superlative level of quality that adults will greatly appreciate, as will their children.”

Finally, AndroidRundown.com writer Carter Dotson took on the establishment and challenged the conventional wisdom about “iPhone Killer” hardware: “Well, it took a bit longer than expected, but it seems like Google is finally going to use their Motorola acquisition to actually make a standout phone for themselves, the “X Phone.” Or whatever the next Nexus device will be called.
The immediate speculation swirling around is that this is finally Google’s “iPhone Killer.” You know, like the other Nexus devices that were iPhone killers. I don’t think that anything at this point will be an iPhone killer. It just isn’t going to happen.”

And so begins 2013! Keep track of all the latest happenings, including developments in the Best App Ever Awards, by following us on Twitter, liking us on Facebook and following us on Pinterest. And from all of us across the 148Apps network of sites, have a Happy New Year!

In late 2008, in response to then mounting chart pressure, we started the Best App Ever Awards to honor some of the best apps available, not just the best selling. At that time, and it’s ever more true now, high position on the top apps charts was thought of by many to be the only measure of success. We knew there were better ways to honor the best apps, and started the Best App Ever Awards.
Now in it’s 5th year, the goal of the Best App Ever Awards remains unchanged. Honor the best apps, even if they are not chart toppers. It’s with great pride that we open up this years awards for nominations.
The Best App Ever awards is the one of the most prestigious awards for mobile apps and games. Last year over 1,500,000 votes were cast in the quest to find the best. This year it’s back bigger and better than ever. Users can nominate their favorite apps and games in any of over 100 categories by heading to the app nomination page and choosing a category.
Nominations are open through the end of the year. After that the nominations will be tallied and the top ten iOS apps in each category will battle it out for the awards. In addition, the ten iOS apps that get the most nominations overall will fight it out for the title of Best App Ever.

Over at GiggleApps, our site dedicated to reviewing the latest apps for kids, reviewer Amy Solomon took a closer look at the new Charlie Brown Christmas App, saying, “It is lovely that children can decorate their own tree with included ornaments and other decorations, as well as a few that must be earned by finding all the hidden items as accomplishments. This area is found on the first title page of the book and can easily be overlooked as one starts to read. Please look for it. I am also smitten with the last page of this app where the characters are all shown with image and name, and a tap letting readers hear the line they are most noted for in this story, a great section for me to go over with my son as he is new to these characters.”

Finally, AndroidRundown writer Carter Dotson published a commentary regarding the recent CarrierIQ revelations. Dotson says, “Some of the fallout is settling from the explosive Carrier IQ revelations – naturally, most parties involved are denying any kind of wrongdoing, or even that their tools are even installed at all on the phones. Apps to search for the existence of the tools on phones now exist. As well, apparently even Carrier IQ was found on iOS devices, although Apple has pledged to remove them in a future iOS software update. Interestingly, one researcher has found that the software likely isn’t sending vast swaths of user personal information back to carriers and manufacturers, although there are still some questions about the data that is being recorded by Carrier IQ tools. In fact, a lot of this data may be used for benign purposes such as determining where phone calls are being dropped, rather than any kind of purpose of spying on user information.”

We’re done for this week. But next week brings us that much closer to Christmas, and closer to the new year. Keep informed by liking our Facebook page and following us on Twitter. Jingle on your merry way….and see you next week.

The British Academy of Film and Television offers a select amount of Video Game awards to highlight the best of the video game industry. For the first time ever, an iOS game has won, beating out games on more traditional handheld platforms like the DS and PSP. In addition, Chillingo/Zeptolab, the developers of Cut the Rope, beat out large companies like Sony, Nintendo and Warner Bros. to take home the prize of Best Handheld Game at the award ceremonies on March 16, 2011.
Cut the Rope is a physics based puzzle game that has sold more than six million copies worldwide on the iTunes App Store. No stranger to awards, it had already been given the honor of being listed in Apple’s iTunes Hall of Fame as well as our very own Best Apps Ever Awards. It’s also been noticed by the Game Developer’s Choice Awards for Best Handheld Game and PocketGamer’s Best iPhone Casual/Puzzle Game and Most Innovative iPhone game. The accolades keep pouring in!
One of the most popular games of the year, it’s easy to see why it’s getting such attention. Overall, this is fantastic news for iOS game developers, as they receive more praise from mainstream award and media outlets for their fantastic work. I, for one, hope that this trend continues and that iOS receives more legitimate credit as a capable and robust platform for games, not just as a mobile device, but as a gaming handheld it its own right.
Cut the Rope is available on the iPhone for $0.99; however, there is a ‘lite’ version to test before buying as well as a free Holiday themed ‘gift’ app which was released in December. Cut the Rope HD is also available on the iPad for $1.99. If you haven’t played this game yet, now is the perfect time to catch up on what all the award-wining fuss is about!

While 148Apps is the creator of the Best App Ever Awards, we recognize that there is plenty of room for other awards for all of the awesome mobile app developers out there. GetJar, a company that bills themselves as the worlds second largest app store, are sponsoring a new kind of mobile app award, the Gettie awards.
These awards will honor just one app in each of six platforms: iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile, J2ME, and Symbian. The winner in each category will win $15,000 in pay per download credits on GetJar. In addition, a single app will be chosen to win $25,000 in credit from GetJar.
“We are thrilled to honor the best and brightest application developers with The Gettie Awards this year,” said Ilja Laurs, CEO and Founder, GetJar. “We feel it is important to recognize the developer community’s achievements across all major platforms to really appreciate the amazing content that is responsible for today’s vibrant app economy.”
While I’m sure most developers would prefer cash, winning exposure on GetJar isn’t the worst prize in the world. I recommend all developers enter their best apps. You just might win!

This inaugural competition is the first iPhone OS Application achievement awards to recognize the best iPhone apps and games released in the iTunes App Store in 2008. The goal is to help publicize the very best apps available, not just the best-selling apps.

Nominations are still tight with it being a pretty open race in all of the categories as it stands right now. Especially so with the Best App Ever race — less than 75 nominations separate the #1 from the #10 nominee.
Here’s how some of the nominations break down as of 12/22 12:00pm Pacific:
Total nominations: 5,079
Total apps nominated: 725
Category with most nominations: Most Useful App
Category with least nominations: Free Or Ad Supported Game
Category with most apps nominated: Most Innovative App
Category with the least apps nominated: Best Racing Game
Tightest category (least # of nominations separate #1-#10): Best 99 Cent Game
Widest category (most # of nominations separate #1-#10): Best Casual Game
We’ll post here again to let you know the final nominees and when voting is open on 12/31.

148apps.com is proud to announce the launch of the 2008 Best App Ever Awards. A new site to allow you to nominate the apps and games you best love for over 30 awards including the title Best App Ever. We want to honor the best in iPhone apps and games, not just the best selling.
The awards are now open to receive nominations for apps and games. Nominations end on December 30th.
Once all nominations are totaled, verified, and calculated, we’ll take the top 5 nominated from the site and combine those with 5 nominations from the list of bloggers, developers, and industry people we have been contacting about these awards. That will give us 10 nominations for each category. In addition, the 10 apps that get the most votes across all categories will compete for the title of Best App Ever.
On December 31st we’ll post the nominees for all categories and voting will start. Winners will be announced on January 7th, 2009 at the MacWorld Expo.
Head on over to http://bestappever.com to nominate your favorite apps.
