It's very simple to look at, but that plain exterior hides a fun word game within.

Word Cracker taps into that time in the day when you're in the mood for a wordy challenge rather than have your reflexes tested. Players are presented with various words with their vowels removed, and left to figure out the solution. There's the potential to be educated here with some great categories available. Either way, it's quite good fun for short periods of time.

The categories involved are pretty varied. There's the option for random words, as well as countries, the human body, living things, sports terms, the periodic table, US capitals, US cities, US presidents and US states. Once a category has been chosen, players are then given a set time limit (with options available for 1, 3 or 5 minutes as well as unlimited time) and it's down to them to solve as many words as possible. It's a little easy at times with only the random word category offering difficulty levels. It is fun though and, at times, quite educational if you're not very knowledgeable in a particular category.

A Head-to-Head mode adds to the enjoyment with it possible to play competitively against friends by passing the iPhone between each other. Really though, this is a game most about competing to beat one's own high score. I found it best enjoyed as part of a lunch break as it was surprisingly addictive to keep trying to boost my score.

In the case of scoring, everything is geared towards how many aids are used. The game reduces points if you use a hint or show how many letters each word is, so it's worth going for more challenging methods. The addition of a Hard mode when using categories would have been welcome though.

In its short life, Word Cracker has already benefited from a few updates so I'm hopeful that more categories will appear soon and possibly some tougher challenges. With regular updates, Word Cracker could prove to be quite a hit amongst word game fans and rightly so.
