Whether in a familiar city or a new area that one is keen to explore, it’s fun to discover new places, right? That’s the idea that Veu taps into, offering a simple to use search tool that comes up with some attractive and clearly laid out suggestions.
Looking appropriately iOS 7-ish in nature, Veu is an immediately classy app to use. The opening screen tells one all that’s needed. Either tap on the ‘find nearby places’ button or enter a search request manually. Veu can produce ideas for all manners of things from the best taco in the area to the finest local museum. Occasionally it’ll come up with a suggestion that isn’t particularly relevant, but these are few and far between.
Each search comes up with a selection of ideas; each with an address, website details, average rating, phone number, and an indication of whether the place is currently open. Bear in mind that the latter is occasionally inaccurate, as I found a few places open despite the app thinking they would be closed.
An attractive photo demonstrating the place is supplied, along with various reviews. Coming via Google means that these reviews can be a little patchy in quality but I found that most places had appropriately comprehensive comments, giving one an indication of what to expect.
That’s pretty much all there is to Veu, leaving it slightly barebones. For instance, there’s no way of ‘favoriting’ an item for later reference or the option to email an idea to a friend. It’s not even possible to immediately jump back to the top of the screen, which is quite the oversight.
Given those omissions, Veu could do with a little work to make it both useful yet simple to use. It’s a fine starting point with the majority of content being quite useful as a springboard of ideas. It’d just be all the better with these finer details worked out.
