Transformers: Earth Wars covers the basics of any Transformers-themed game: it has robots smashing, bombing and shooting at each other. And loads of explosions.

However, Earth Wars has more than the name to it: It’s a complex tower defence affair where you’ll find yourself measuring timing and placement with obsessive compulsion.

The game will sure be reminiscing of Clash of Clans, with a pinch of Starcraft style thrown in the mix. The Michael Bay level amount of punches and explosions just make it all the more attractive.

Build a robot-base

The game eases you into the basics of base construction and base-sieging. Whether you choose to be an Autobot or a Decepticon is up to you; each HQ is built in the same way.

With alloy and energon resources, you build and upgrade all types of turrets, outposts and walls, in the hope that any alien enemy GoBot invading you will be repelled by your automatized defence system.

They never are. Even though right off the bat you’re giving a pretty hefty amount of resources and currency – coins speed up timers like upgrades and recharges -, you first need to learn how to set up your base layout.

This game, even with the limited tactical decisions, packs a punch in terms of strategy. Particularly if you choose to go the free-to-play route and not cash out for cyber coins, which makes upgrade timers longer.

Pillage and plunder

Half of the game, in order to gain resources and advance in the story, you will be sending an ever-increasing team of robot-vehicles to invade and destroy enemy settlements. To do so, you spend fuel cells, which determine how many assaults on enemies you can perform.

The fight is mostly automatic – you choose your giant cybernetic pugilists and you charge on. You can select where and when to spawn them, within limits, as well as which special abilities to use. Other than that, you just watch like Caesar.

Don’t be fooled, though. This game is hard, and the apparently trifling decisions are not at all - timing and positioning are crucial in this game. The limited choices are frustrating at points, particularly at the beginning, where you can’t even order your troops where to attack.

For example, you may want to attack the turrets first. However, taking down resource-focused buildings in the enemy base will give you energy to activate your special skills, giving a boost to your damage output.
The combat system develops progressively, but for the first few hours, these incursions are a bit slow. As soon as you get fancy Transformers with flashy especial abilities, explosions ensue and things liven up.

Earth Wars

Aside from the story missions, you can invade other players to steal resources from them. If you’re an Autobot, for example, you will only attack or be invaded by Decepticon players, and vice versa.
Soon after you start the game, you can join an Alliance, which will wage wars against other enemy alliances to get extra resources.

This clan-based element involves player in a very passionate community. The only thing is that you have to join a selection process to enter an alliance, with their top members reviewing your application.

Damn, these Autobots are cliquey.
