To call Temple Run 2: Frozen Shadows an expansion is inaccurate. What it is is a winter reskin of the tried and true endless running gameplay we've all seen before.

Is that a bad thing? Not really. After all, why fix what isn't broken?

However, the lack of any meaningful gameplay changes does feel like a bit of a shame - particularly when you realise that the franchise has been around for over four years.

Frozen creativity

Frozen Shadowsstill has you running away from a weird gorilla monster, except this time it looks a lot more like a yeti. That's in theme with the setting.

The obstacles you face are largely the same too. There's fire, debris, walls, and chasms to slide, tilt, and jump over.

There are a couple of new obstacles that mildly spice up the gameplay though.At any point rocks, trees, and boulders can fall and block your path which keeps you on your toes like never before. It's a great addition that feels like it should have always been there.

Then there's a spinning spike trap which is incredibly unpredictable and requires perfect timing and positioning to clear every time.Temple Run 2needed more challenges like this.

Here we go again

Apart from that it's all classic Temple Run 2 gameplay. The upgrades are the same, the power-ups are the same, and the characters are the same - apart from a few new unlockable skins.

The minecart and water slide sections are gone in place of an ice floe but it plays exactly the same as the water slide - though it is a lot more aesthetically pleasing.

The bottom line

Temple Run 2: Frozen Shadowsis not an expansion as the description suggests but it's a timely reskin of a game we'd largely forgotten about, and it offers a great excuse to get back into it again.

It's stillTemple Run 2and that's not a bad thing, and the few new obstacles provide an effective reminder of why you fell in love with it in the first place.
