Tap Army is an immensely simple game, but it’s kind of fun. It appreciates that, when playing a shoot em up, most people just want to shoot mindlessly at things that move - and it offers exactly that. A few missions or challenges would have been nice for adding longevity but it’s still satisfying enough as a mindless blaster.

You control four soldiers as they attempt to keep the hordes of enemies at bay. Controls are just a matter of tapping on each soldier in order to make them fire in a straight line. At first, Tap Army seems a little too easy. Essentially, you can just mash four fingers on screen to unleash plenty of bullets at your foes. The game has a trick up its sleeve though, in the form of bombs. Shoot one of these bombs and it’s game over, so you have to start paying attention to what you’re firing at. That’s when things turn trickier as you find yourself trying to juggle what buttons you hit at which time.

Tap Army mixes things up a little by offering you new weapons to use too, such as a mini gun, flame thrower, and laser gun. Enemies start being brighter too, able to leap between lanes to keep you busy. Tanks and helicopters require multiple hits, and you find yourself trying to prioritize as efficiently as possible. Ultimately though, Tap Army keeps it pretty simple. If it moves, you kill it.

It’d be nice if things could be mixed up a bit more, but Tap Army works reasonably well as a high score chaser. Perhaps an upgrade system or mission structure would have enhanced its potential, but for a free and lightweight game it scratches that primal itch.
