Kal-El from the planet Krypton, or Superman as we now know him, is available on the small screen and available in the App Store as of today. Based on one of DC Comics' most prolific superheros of all times, Superman is an action game that pits the Man of Steel against, who else, Lex Luthor. But this time, the story starts out with Mr. Luthor playing a good guy and working to help the city. But we all know how that usually ends.

And we were all right. Soon Luthor's "good" cops are "protecting" the city and Superman has to do the dirty work and rid the streets of the longtime evildoer. Thus, the hidden agenda was all but hidden from the caped superhero. Longtime fans of the comic series will be happy to know that this Superman seems based on the old school comic style. And new or newer fans will enjoy the modern take on the mobile game.

As for actual gameplay, it's pretty stellar. I was worried that it would be some over-hyped game leaving me with a lackluster experience, but it came through. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it leapt a tall building. The player maneuvers Superman throughout the boxed in city using his powers such as flight, super-strength, invulnerability, super-speed and heat-emitting vision to take out bad cops, getaway cars, put out building fires, destroy missiles and stop space garbage from littering the streets below, not to mention killing pedestrians.

Scoring is setup much like the norm with points awarded for enemies overcome and levels completed in the fastest time, with stars being awarded (bronze, silver and gold) for overall points. This is carried out through 18 levels with the ultimate goal of saving Metropolis from Luthor and his thugs. The visual appeal is quite enticing and brought me back to old episodes on the television that were set in the old times of Metropolis. And the soundtrack was quite nice too as it was created by the composer of the award-winning game Contre Jour.

For its well developed gameplay, extensive level offerings and superhero abilities, Superman is a iOS game that new and old fans will enjoy. Thus, I'd highly recommend checking it out.
