The most outstanding feature of Steampunk Racing 3D is by far its unique style. In this game, the vehicles are steam-powered and packed with devastating weapons that help to ensure victory. The cars look fantastic and the special items that are picked up along the course are weapons not encountered in any similar app. However, some issues with the UI, controls, and sound keep this game from the top of the charts.
There are several vehicles to choose from, each offering different handling and weapons capabilities. These vehicles can also be upgraded as you progress throughout the game via the campaign, multiplayer, and time trials. Of course, as with many free games, you can also upgrade by spending real money to purchase coins. I am not a fan of this feature, but it can be avoided while still enjoying the game.
At the beginning, the actual racing does take a bit of getting used to. The vehicles handle terribly at first, making it seem like you are driving on ice. In addition, the default tilt sensitivity makes the controls that much worse. I had to bump my sensitivity way up high in order to even stay on the track. After gaining some control, another problem seems to arise. In manual acceleration mode, the player needs to hold his thumb down on the screen. If right-handed, this option leaves the weapon selection area partly covered. If left-handed, the racing position becomes obscured. The best option is to select automatic acceleration.
While racing, several items may be picked up and used as weapons against your opponents. Four items in total may be stored before having to use them. These weapons range from EMPs to missiles; there are 30 of them in all.
The music in this game is absolutely fantastic, but the sound effects are somewhat disappointing. There are two main areas that stick out the most. First, the tires do not make any sort of screeching sound while skidding into a turn. Second, when crashing into a wall, there lacks any sort of impact sound. There are just little sounds effects that seem to be missing, and consequently take away from the overall feel of the game. Lastly, the font size is just too small to see while racing. There are moments when an achievement will pop up and the text is simply too small to read. This is an issue throughout the app.
Aside from the few minor issues Steampunk Racing 3D is absolutely a fun racing game. There are plenty of apps in this genre, but this one is particularly intriguing and worth checking out.
