Offering plenty of ways to communicate, Squawkin is a little quiet for meeting new friends, but it's fine for group collaboration.

Like a lot of real-time communication tools, Squawkin is either going to be incredibly useful for your needs or a nice but inessential novelty. At its strongest when putting you together with other friends or family, it could really help you organize various things through your phone. And it might even help you meet like-minded folk.

The idea is that you either join groups or crowds, or opt to create your own. Groups are designed to be searchable or hidden, allowing you to invite your friends to gather around virtually to discuss things. Think of it as a natural progression after message boards and forums. It’s the kind of thing that would work well when you’re trying to co-ordinate a group effort for something. You can opt to send text, an audio message, or include a photo. Trying to plan a big party or what to get everyone for Christmas? This is the kind of thing you want to use.

Crowds work on a similar basis but lean more towards the public. You can use them to follow people with similar interests to your own or potentially build up your own following. The same kind of principles as for groups apply here though.

Squawkin works pretty well, being reasonably quick to take you through its paces. Privacy is always at the forefront of the app here with plenty of options to remain hidden, both singularly and as part of a group. Squawkin doesn’t look particularly stylish and it lacks some useful tooltips and a tutorial, but it works well where it counts.

Despite the potential of crowds the public side of Squawkin is a little quiet, which makes me think this is an app that’s best for those who want to organize things privately. For that side of things, it does a great job by offering private messaging as well as group communication. Don’t expect to find new friends here though; it’s probably never going to be that kind of social network.
