I have fond memories of playing my first mobile game, Snake, years ago. Snake Rewind is kind of the same thing but with color and a not entirely accurate control scheme. For the sake of nostalgia, you’ll probably enjoy it for a few minutes at least.
As before, you’re controlling a snake, traveling around the single screen level with a need to pick up fruit. Pick up a piece of fruit and you get a bit longer, meaning there’s less room to move around. Hit a wall or yourself and it’s game over.
It’s a simple concept but Snake Rewind adds a few tweaks to the formula. Power-ups can be picked up, such as a magnet that draws fruit nearer to you, plus you can unlock new backgrounds. Once it’s game over, you can spend points on rewinding the game for as long as you like, giving you a chance of a do over.
This is all fine and reasonably entertaining, at least in terms of nostalgia. What doesn’t work so well for Snake Rewind is its control scheme. There’s a choice of swipes or taps but neither entirely succeeds, causing you to make mistakes that aren’t your fault. This is what’s going to ensure that Snake Rewind isn’t a game that’s quite as wonderfully nostalgic as you were hoping.
