Scanning documents can sometimes be a frustrating and tedious project, especially when working with multiple documents. Maybe I just haven’t worked with many quality scanners in my time but I’ve never found the scanning process to be as good as I’d like. Scanner Mini is a free app the aims to take the headaches away from scanning and simplify the process using iOS devices. I’m happy to say that it works very well and does exactly what it advertises to do.

When I first picked up Scanner Mini I didn’t think it was that special because I thought it basically just took pictures of documents. I figured I could accomplish this same task just using the camera on my iPad or iPhone. Scanner Mini actually does a lot more than just take a simple picture. The app will actually take a picture and then convert it to a scanned image as if produced by a traditional scanner. The app can then convert the documents to a PDF. The app will automatically recognize borders as best it can but it does give users the options to crop their scans to make sure the entire document is visible in the finished product. Scanner Mini will also eliminate any shadows that are often present when taking pictures from a top-down perspective.

Scanner Mini is a free version of the full Scanner Pro. Scanner Mini will perform a lot of the functions of the full version but there are a few key features that are missing. For starters, Scanner Mini does not give users to option to export their scanned images via email. It also does not let users annotate or highlight their documents. These are all features in the full version that were obviously left out of the free version to entice users to upgrade for $6.99. Scanner Mini does however allow users to export their scanned documents but the process is a little more complicated. Users will need to plug their devices into their computers and transfer the files manually.

Scanner Mini is a handy app to have on hand for anyone who does a small amount of scanning. Users who scan a lot and want a little more control over their documents along with more features will definitely want to upgrade to the full version. I’d recommend Scanner Mini to anyone who performs an occasional scan and has ready access to connect their device to a computer to transfer their scanned files. Overall Scanner Mini works great and makes the scanning process easy and worry free.
