In an app store filled with extremely simplistic “high score” games, Rocket Downhill Penguin sits about the middle of the pack. It’s certainly no Doodle Jump, but it can’t be considered a bad game either. At the end of the day, it just sits right around non-memorable.
Rocket Downhill Penguin operates like most games in the genre. There is a single track that players attempt to maneuver their penguin down, gaining points the entire time. Instead of platforms and space creatures, the penguin must maneuver around pine trees and snowmen. There is a life bar along the bottom of the screen, so it’s not a one hit your out kind thing. Cups of coco, or coffee, or tea, some warm liquid, are scattered throughout the course replenishing health and warming the insides. There are even stars scattered less frequently that give extra lives for continued play, and high score achievement.
The game is easy on the eyes, even if it’s overly simplistic. The music is what you would expect from a game such as this, and the controls work just fine. It’s well executed, and does exactly what it’s intended to do. Depending on your skill level, this could be a great time, or a frustrating one. I don’t tend to do well with high score hunts, even going as far back as pinball machines, so I didn’t do so great. Overall it’s a nice time consumer when you need one.
