Robots! Invade Dream World is an interesting arcade game that has players take control of a kung fu sheep tasked with ridding dream world of a robot menace. The entire game plays like a mashup of well-known, casual iOS games like Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, and Jetpack Joyride, borrowing cleverly from each of these massive titles to make a completely new and exciting gameplay experience.
In Robots!, players control the sheep protagonist by tilting their device to float around the screen, tapping the screen to initiate a flying kick, and swiping down to stomp downward. Players must use all of these maneuvers if they want to progress successfully through each wave of robots whilst collecting gears, avoiding bombs, and collecting powerups. To top it all off, the sheep is battling its robot enemies in mid-air, so players need to constantly be attacking robots to maintain upward momentum, as falling to the bottom of the screen too many times results in a game over.
After each round is complete, players get rewarded for any missions they may have completed during their run (e.g. defeat wave 1 of robots) and will also be allowed to spend any gears collected on upgrades that can add variety to each subsequent play session. If players complete enough missions, they can also unlock new maps, all of which present new enemy patterns and waves. This variety can keep players occupied for a good while, and provides enough of a challenge to keep players interested in honing their abilities.
The only complaints that can be laid against Robots! are relatively minor: The art style is a bit basic, but serviceable; the progression of unlocking new areas could be a bit faster; and it seems strange that there is no back button for players once they get to the map selection screen, forcing players to either force quit the app or play a round before being able to explore the score screen or spend more gears in the store. In the grand scheme of things, these issues distract very little from the overall experience, making Robots! an easily recommendable game for anyone looking for a new casual arcade experience.
