The old west is a genre largely untouched by the gaming industry. It is really too bad as there is so much fun to be had with cannons, six shooters, and bar maids. While Rebel Run may not have you going toe to toe with Wyatt Earp, it does tiptoe down this largely untouched genre.

Rebel Run is a new spin on the classic cops and robbers’ game. You play the role of a lawman that must chase down a robber. The problem is that you are powering a hand trolley while using your cannon to blast down the robber from his balloon powered getaway craft. You must accurately calculate trajectory and power of your shot to take out all the balloons in order to bring down the robber. Further complicating this mess is you only have so much time to take the bad guy down before he escapes to his palace of love.

The game comes with a limited amount of stages, but each stage will test your resolve to chase down the bad guy. Some stages will start you out at a disadvantage of having to move in reverse to clear a hill right away. This causes you to have to move quickly to take the robber down before he escapes. The inclusion of a three star rating system will give you completion addicts something to strive for as well. This is a surprisingly challenging little game.

Rebel Run provides a repetitive world for your game of cat and mouse. The visuals are a smattering of basic primary colors like brown and blue. The world does carry a bit of MS Paint feel as well. Outside of hills and bumps, the world never really changes. The audio is the same few tracks stuck on repeat. Some new backdrops and new tunes would do a lot for this game.

Once you have completed the game, there is little reason to go back to it. The inclusion of achievements and leaderboards of some form would go a long way to increasing the longevity of this game. As it stands now, the game cost versus game enjoyment just does not equate out to a good value. Hold off on this one unless you have some undying urge to scream yeehaw and shoot a cannon.
