Rage of the Gladiator reminds me a lot of the movie, Gladiator, in that the game is about a man who is wrongfully forced to fight for his life in a gladiator arena, all for the enjoyment of the viewing public. Rage of the Gladiator was originally available for the Wii but has now brought its stunning gameplay to iOS devices.

Gracius was sentenced to the arena when he was wrongfully accused of murdering his father, who just so happens to be the king. Being sent to the arena was essentially a death sentence but Gracius won’t go down without a fight. He fights some of the fiercest competitors, most of which are all but human. The enemy warriors each have their own background story and range from a demon sea witch to a crazy old snake charmer. Each enemy has their own unique attributes and attacks that will keep players on their toes. The game starts out at the “Novice” difficulty and the enemies progressively get more difficult to defeat. Once all the enemies under the “Novice” game mode are defeated, players will advance to “Warrior” and then “Gladiator” modes. After each battle, Gracius earns attribute points that players can use to increase his abilities and special attacks.

There are a lot of similarities between Rage of the Gladiator and the popular iOS game, Infinity Blade. Those familiar with the Infinity Blade style of gameplay won’t have many problems helping Gracius in his battles. Players are able to swipe directly on their screens in the direction they want Gracius to attack and combos are earned with each additional successful blow. The enemies don’t go down easily, and players will need to watch for oncoming attacks and either dodge, counter, shield or jump out of the way to prevent getting slashed. Gracius also has magic abilities that allow him to perform special attacks that do considerable amounts of damage.

The graphics in this game are some of the best I’ve seen. They easily rival those of Infinity Blade and are sre close to console quality. The game performed very smoothly and without any lag on my third generation iPad. Players with devices older than the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 should proceed with caution as this game requires a good amount of computing power.

I’ve been really impressed with the quality of Rage of the Gladiator. I think it’s an excellent title that has a lot to offer fans of the original Wii version. Like the games in the genre, the gameplay can be repetitive but I think there is enough challenge to keep players busy and wanting more.
