Pirate-themed games are extremely popular and entertaining, and Raft Pirates is no exception. In this game, the pirates are robots that build their mighty ship out of square rafts filled with devastating weapons. While the graphics and animations are simplistic, the addictive and original gameplay is what really makes this app successful.

The objective of the game is to build a pirate ship, stock it with weapons, and attack other pirates. In order add more rafts to a ship and build more weapons, players must execute deep sea dives in order to collect materials. These dives can be done automatically, or players may take control via a mini game. If successful, the mini game can yield much more reward. All of these activities take a certain amount of real time to complete. So, players can either wait in real time, or use special tokens to speed time up. Of course, tokens may be replenished by making an in-app purchase, using real money to continue playing the game.

As an MMO, players can battle other players online from anywhere in the world. Once a raft has some weapons on it, players can take it out on the open ocean to find other ships to attack. The battle begins with a roll of the dice for each player. The more weapons that are on the raft, the more dice the players can roll. The highest number wins the chance to attack. In the event of a tie, the win goes to the defender. After a victory players are awarded with gold, and are able to salvage the wreckage and acquire materials that can be used to build additional weapons.

The replay value is high, as players may continue to unlock new weapons and build more rafts to add to their mighty ship. There are always new players to attack, including big boss battles. Even though the graphics and animations are basic, the gameplay is addictive and entertaining. Also, the real-time aspect of the game that forces players to wait until their weapon is built, does not take away from or slow down the experience at all. This is one of those freemium apps that I have no problem endorsing. It’s absolutely worth checking out.
