The first thing I thought when propositioned with a math-based puzzle game was "get it out of my face." I'm glad I gave Qwhizzle a chance however, because it's a fantastic puzzle game that I can't stop playing.
The aim of Qwhizzle is to reach a set of target numbers by way of a mathematical equation, created by linking both the number cubes and the intertwined 'operators' (cubes displaying mathematical symbols) as laid out on the game board. This link is created by swiping between them, thereby creating a chain. Each stage is also timed, so the quicker it's completed the better the score will be. It's deceptively simple, at least to begin with, but incredibly infectious and playable. The interface is delightfully minimalistic and is consequently a pleasure to use.
As time goes on the boards become more difficult by incorporating multiplication and division into the mix, which certainly tested my feeble mathematical abilities. Fortunately there is a hint option which allows players a sneak peek at either the first block in a chain or all of them. There is a fantastic amount of content available, with over 600 levels spanning 5 difficulty settings and 3 game modes - each of which needs to be unlocked with coins earned in the game. Not to forget the online multiplayer mode either, in which players can test their numerical skills against others in a timed contest. Playing a few games in Battle Mode will almost certainly be necessary too, because even if players achieve gold on every stage on the first 3 Rookie levels, they won't have enough coins to unlock the next pack. Luckily online play is a great way to earn lots of coins at once.
All in all, I can't get enough of Qwhizzle. Its wonderfully thought out interface makes for a great experience that is both challenging and enjoyable, making it my go-to game when I need to flex the ol' mental muscles during a spare few minutes. Given the fact that it's free, there's simply no reason not to give Qwhizzle a try.
