Building upon what worked so well for its predecessor, MOS Speedrun 2 reminds me of my childhood. Games were more expensive and less readily available back then, which meant one game would have to last me the better part of a year. That meant I’d devise my own speed runs for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I’d be trying to beat a previous record or trying to collect all the coins in a certain space of time. Another time, I’d try to complete the level without killing any enemies. MOS Speedrun 2 takes that kind of concept and runs with it. Fast.
Across 30 levels, the basic aim is simple - get to the end of the stage as possible. MOS Speedrun 2 builds upon that a little though also encouraging you to collect all the coins, but mostly, this is about speed. Each level should only take you a minute or two to complete but you’ll soon find the need to keep playing.
As you repeat each stage, you learn new things about them, figuring out how to shave off a few valuable seconds. MOS Speedrun 2 is fairly tough in that one touch from an enemy kills you, but that’s the beauty of it. Single use checkpoints go some way to counteracting the difficulty level, but it’s still pretty tough.
Each level also offers a hidden skull, further reinforcing a need to explore carefully. Through acquisition of such things, you unlock new stages, as well as gain new costumes to try on.
With such a focus on speed, MOS Speedrun 2 needs tight controls and it certainly has those. Virtual buttons do the job well, ensuring the only thing stopping you from succeeding is your own lack of skill. It’s a blast trying, though.
