Overall Rating: ★★★★☆ Groovebox is a well-polished electronic music creation app that makes live music performances fun and easy. It is simple enough for beginners to experiment with, yet also has a ton of features for professional musicians to sink their teeth into.

Photo 1Everything needed to be musically creative is on the same main screen of the app. Right away, users can start tapping on the grids to create drum and synthesizer patterns. For example, when using the drum pad, tapping a square on the grid will result in a specific percussive sound being played. Users can add multiple sounds on different parts of the beat. The main down beats are highlighted on the grid, so users have a reference as to where to place certain notes or sounds. Each small square is one quarter of the beat.

For the synthesizer, different scales may be selected which include various modes such as dorian and locrian, or descriptors such as happy or intense. Custom scales may also be created. Every aspect of the music that is produced may be altered. For example, different octaves may be changed, sound effects such as reverb or delay may be added, and automatic harmony can be triggered.

Photo 7There is also a recording feature where patterns may be saved and loaded when needed. There may be up to four patterns saved at a time, so each may be introduced into the performance on the fly. The app will automatically start the pattern to match precisely with the beat. Additionally, a file system allows the user to delete, rename, copy, and paste saved tracks.

There are simply too many features to mention in this review alone. This app is packed with capabilities that allow every aspect of the music to be tweaked and customized. The one complaint I do have is the lack of a guided tutorial to help explain the main features of the app. There is a guide to read, but users must navigate to a separate screen where only the guide may be viewed. It would be beneficial to have an active tutorial in the app itself so that the true beginners may gain more confidence when using the various functions. Groovebox is absolutely one of the best electronic music-creation apps available. With an abundance of features, musicians will find it to be an incredibly useful tool to add to their live performances.
