Mikey Shorts was great. Mikey Hooks was great. Guess what? Mikey Boots is great too! It’s a trilogy of awesome. It’s a compelling speed running focused auto runner that’s sure to grab you and refuse to let go.
Across 42 levels you glide past spikes, robots, and missiles. While Mikey glides automatically, you dictate his direction with a kind of thrusting mechanism affecting how high you go. Given the controls are simply a matter of tapping left or right, it’s impressive just how tightly designed they are. There’s no chance of dying because of flukey controls here. They're flawless.
At times, levels can be quite tricky - especially when you’re focused on being as quick as possible. Fortunately, it never feels frustrating. Each level only takes a short time to complete, with a quick restart button enticing you into future runs to eke a second or two off your best time. It’s the relatively little things like the ghost that follows you around to represent your previous run, as well as the bar at the top of the screen always showing how far you’re through the level, that keeps you so interested. You will keep coming back for more, determined to be better next time even if you've managed to three star a stage.
Almost Mario-esque, there are coins upon coins to collect, too. These coins can be used to unlock the many, many customization options at hand. You can buy new hats, eyewear, facial accessories (like a beard of bees!), and colorful boots, all to make a more personalized experience. Each is inexpensive to purchase and there’s never any worry about buying in-app purchases or anything like that, as there aren’t any.
Ultimately though, Mikey Boots is just simply great fun. It easily offers that ‘just one more go’ factor, enticing you into being better every time. It’s a fantastic example of a well-made platformer.
