I’ve learnt something new today thanks to Majika The Fairy. Fairies are surprisingly violent when threatened; who’d have thought it? They look so innocent.

Majika The Fairy is absolutely nothing thrilling to look at but it is rather fun to play in short bursts. You control Majika, a fairy who has to save Majickland from the threat of some nasty monsters. It’s a side scrolling shooter basically but with a rather different control system. Instead of using a virtual d-pad or tilt controls, you tap where you want to move to. It takes a bit of getting used to and admittedly I wasn’t keen at first; it grew on me though. There’s also a button on the right side of the screen that allows you to fire various missiles at your foes.

As you’d imagine from a side scrolling shooter, there’s an assortment of power ups to collect. Interestingly, Majika The Fairy throws a curveball by having some power ups that don’t actually help you. Generally though, they’re the standard fire power increase type bonuses and extra lives.

For the price, Majika The Fairy does give you something to do for a reasonable amount of time as there are 6 different worlds, each offering bosses along the way. The techno soundtrack ensures that you want to progress faster and faster. It fits into the theme of the game well. The OpenFeint support is also welcome as the achievements come quite steadily. Having a Leaderboard to obsessively work your way up is nice too.

Majika The Fairy won’t be a game you’re returning to for months on end but as a disposable treat, you could do a lot worse.
