Baking a cake from scratch is a pretty rewarding thing to do. It makes a great gift for someone, tastes nicer than shop bought cake and is often much cheaper too. There are quite a few steps to master in order to make a great cake, though, which is where Illustrated Step by Step Baking Cakes helps out immensely. The app might look pretty simple, given its Inkling background, but it offers plenty of recipes, tips and advice on how to make the perfect cake, whatever the occasion.
Clearly yet simply displayed on the iPhone screen, Illustrated Step by Step Baking Cakes offers various sections to dive straight into. An introduction and useful information section sets things off, with the latter offering conversion rates, something that the app lacks the ability to do automatically. From then on, it’s all about the recipes and some very attractive imagery.
Cakes are divided into various types, such as cakes for celebrations, cheesecakes, small, and the rather delightful sounding Everyday cake. For those who just fancy browsing the selection, the Cake Chooser slide offers further choice with the likes of American Classics, Healthier Cakes, European Cakes and allergy/intolerance related options. Believe me when I say that every entry looks quite delicious!
Each recipe is attractively laid out, further boosting the appeal. There’s a photo for each, along with a brief explanation of the recipe, followed by serving guidance, cooking and preparation estimates, and a list of ingredients and instructions. It’s all clearly laid out, ensuring that everything looks quite achievable, as well as making it easy to glance back at midway through cooking. A section allowing for the entry of notes should prove extra handy for those who decide to make an adjustment in some way.
Besides the recipes, a small selection of how-to videos and slideshows back up the information within Illustrated Step by Step Baking Cakes. It’s a shame that there aren’t more, as some are really useful, especially to the novice baker. Some techniques are just so much easier to understand when watching a video, such as how to make a roulade.
Illustrated Step by Step Baking Cakes is a very tasty package though, with everything looking distinctly delicious. A search feature, as well as bookmarking facility ensures it’s easy to keep track of ideas and inspiration. It might not be the most exciting of apps to look at, but in exchange it offers a very clear interface, ideal for any level of baker.
