Home Design 3D Review

If you're a fan of architecture and designing home floor plans, then you'll love Home Design 3D. The app brings the desktop software caliber experience of designing a home floor plan to iOS, allowing you to create your own designs on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Home Design 3D allows you to design your very own floor plan and features several useful tools to accomplish that. You can lay out your home in any fashion you like – you have near-total freedom here in that sense. You can plan your design in complete detail, placing doors and windows where you want them, along with furniture and room design options that let you set up your living room and bedrooms with furniture and your kitchen and bathroom with sinks and toilets, respectively. The number of options, along with the flexibility to do whatever you want, is impressive.

The app provides the measurement information for each room in your home and you can also name individual rooms. Theoretically, if you wanted to design an actual home using Home Design 3D, you could do so. And you can even e-mail yourself your floor plan.

There is also a 3D mode that lets you get a three-dimensional view of your home design, including any extras you've placed in it, whether they be doors, windows or furniture. Graphically, the mode is somewhat simplistic – as expected – but it gets the job done. I certainly can't complain considering you can do all this on your iPhone.

The only real downside to Home Design 3D is that you're somewhat limited when it comes to geometric features of your design. Each room you create must be either square or rectangle-shaped – you can't create circular or triangular rooms if you want to get artsy, which is kind of lame.

As someone who has always had a curious interest in architecture, I find Home Design 3D to not only be an incredibly useful iPhone app, I find it to be a genuinely enjoyable one too. And for only $5, it's impressive. Would you want to actually design your entire home using this software? Maybe not. It's a bit limited for a full-scale project like that. But you can definitely get started using it. And, if nothing else, you can have fun creating your own virtual/imaginary home with it.
