Almost everyone in this hectic world could do with taking some time out each day to relax and feel calmer. The problem is that it's rarely that simple! It's all too easy to be distracted or not force one's self to take that break. Headspace can't physically compel its users to stop what they're doing and take 10 minutes out of each day to calm, but it can offer all the tools needed to do exactly that.
The app starts out with an explanation of why such meditation techniques will be so useful in life, and how it's sensible to go in with an open mind so as to reap the most benefits. During a particularly stressful time of life, I can confidently say that the ideas within these videos are useful to remember. It puts things into perspective and helps the user not focus on the little things quite so much.
There are ten video based meditations in all - one for each day with the suggestion that only ten minutes each day is required. Conducted via a mixture of animations and meditation expert, Andy Puddicombe, the videos are simple yet effective. Headspace does require a 3G or Wi-Fi connection to download these videos, but it's possible to download all ten en masse for later, internet free consultation.
Besides the videos, Headspace tracks the progress of the user and offers a few interesting scientific facts and explanations as to why it works. Timers and reminders can also be set to ensure the user never forgets their daily meditation session, or to just take some time out for themselves for a few minutes.
Headspace is a smart app, both in terms of content and its appearance. Everything about it suggests tranquility which is precisely what's needed for such an app. For free, it's all the more attractive.
