Ham on the Run! is about a pig that lives for only three reasons; to run, to eat as many vegetables as he can and to jump on chicken’s heads. In this feemium game from Glu Games, players help the pig accomplish just this using the same game style found in Jetpack Joyride.

The game opens with no tutorial and players are thrown immediately into the action. The pig darts out and runs at a constant pace through what appears to be the grounds of a carnival. Touching the screen will cause the pig to jump as he runs. For whatever reason, the pig loves to jump on chicken’s heads and doing so along the way adds bonuses. Hitting four chickens in a row will send the pig into a bonus stage with opportunity to gather extra veggies. Veggies are used to buy additional spins on a prize wheel for extra prizes and bonuses. Like Jetpack Joyride, there are missions that need to be completed to help advance the character. Obstacles are ever present on the carnival grounds. Cliffs, bear traps and rockets are but a few of the perils the pig will face along his journey that will need to be avoided. Needless to say, this carnival isn’t very kid friendly.

I really like the artwork in this game. The pig is a lovable character and I like the carnival theme. The controls are as basic as they come. Short taps on the screen will cause the pig and make shorter jumps while longer taps on the screen make the pig jump higher. These variations in jump height become necessary when faced with different obstacles.

The game is free to play but extra veggies can be purchases through in-app purchases. I don’t particularly like paying real money for game currency, but I found that there is really no need to pay any additional money in order to play and advance in the game. There is ample opportunity to gather veggies and complete the various missions. For this I am grateful.

The game itself is very repetitive but definitely has an addictive aspect to it. I found myself constantly wanting to better my score. Fans of Jetpack Joyride won’t find anything too surprising here, but all in all I’d have to recommend Ham on the Run!. It’s free, addictive and would appeal to any casual gamer looking to pass a few minutes.
